The Holy Highway

A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people;no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray.

(Is 35:8)

We like to tell our friends, “Make your life el camino sagrado.” It means, “Make your life the Holy Way.”

BECOMING ROADWORTHY …

The Holy Way is not just a spiritual hike. It is a way of life.

Almost anyone can live the holy way, but first we must be made “roadworthy. ” Of course, Jesus did all the hard work for us. And the beautiful Church He gave us through His passion at Calvary has all that we need to become roadworthy. Yes, we are saved by grace, but we must strive for holiness. The Bible tells us that nothing unclean (unholy) will enter heaven (Rev 21:27).

In a very real sense, we must learn to seek first His kingdom and righteousness (Mt 6:33). That’s how we become roadworthy!

FAQ …

So here are a few questions we sometimes get about this pilgrimage that we call life. And of course, they include our own unique replies.

  • Why do you call life a pilgrimage lived on the “Holy Way” or Holy Highway?”

It’s based on Is 35:8, one of two foundational Bible passages for Catholic Roads. The other is Jn 14:6 … the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

  • How do you get on the Holy Highway to travel in your life?

It has a lot to do with vocation.
In short, we’re all made for a special purpose (Jer 29:11-12). God has a plan for each of our lives.
God calls us. We respond (or not). And life happens.
We establish the route for our life in partnership with God by learning to hear His voice, trust His Word, and follow His Way.

  • What does a person do on the Holy Highway?

The short answer is, “We pray.” For the uninitiated, that might sound very boring or dull. But it is not. Real prayer is a conversation with eternal and almighty God. And that is always something very exciting!
As we listen for His voice and respond to His guidance, we encounter “Shrines! Wines! And Interesting People!” We take on His divine life, growing daily in holiness. We experience the great joy of living a full and rich life in His Spirit. And we encounter some of the most inspiring and incredible people ever — most of whom are unknown here on earth but are, undoubtedly very famous in heaven!
And someday, maybe, along the Way, we will become one of those inspiring and incredible people too.

  • What’s the connection between the Holy Highway and Catholic Roads?

They are actually one and the same.
Jesus Christ summoned all people and all nations to the Kingdom of God (Mt 24:14). He died for all of us.
In His infinite wisdom, Jesus prayed that we would be all be one (Jn 17:21).
He established … One church … One baptism … One communion. And there is but one God.
Throughout its 2000 years and against all odds, the Catholic church, established by Christ, has remained faithful to Christ’s prayer for oneness. No matter where you go in the world, you can find a Catholic community. They all have the same faith that you have known back in your home parish. They have the same mass you have. And the even hear the same Scripture verses your friends and family are hearing back home in your parish too.
So the Holy Highway is available to all people in all places, which makes it universal. It is catholic, and that actually means “universal.”
The Holy Highway and Catholic Roads are one and the same.
