Let It Snow

WASHINGTON DC (CR News) —Mo and Kate didn’t blink an eye when they learned that a winter storm was pressing down on them and would become their constant companion during the annual pro-life rally in our nation’s capitol this year. In fact, the two friends actually found themselves looking forward to the challenge.

This year, the rally for life might be a winter wonderland!

Background …

Mo, with her vibrant scarf, and Kate, bundled in layers of sweaters and coats, shared hours of valiant friendship with thousands of other concerned citizens as they stepped out into the snowy landscape. Crisp, frosty clouds of crystal air rose above the massive crowd like smoke from the ancient tabernacle as they marched towards their rally location. The signs they carried proclaimed a most basic right — that every human being has a right to live and breathe and become the amazing person God created them to be.

Mo and Kate focused their attention on the stage. One speaker after another encouraged everyone within miles of the mall. Each spoke passionately about loving those mothers whose lives were in turmoil. And praying for those fathers whose job it was to protect the woman and the little one whose life was in jeopardy. And also, helping them all as a family unit to protect the precious, little life that had been entrusted to them by God.

And The Wind Attacked …

At times, the wind seemed to howl as it pressed against their bitterly, cold faces. The crowd responded by huddling together more closely. Nobody wavered during any of the inspiring messages. It wasn’t long before both Mo and Kate saw the falling snowflakes as silent witnesses to the unwavering love each person present had for God and all the life He created.

The rally ended soon enough, and the two friends shared a moment of reflection together. It was the kind of connection that only those who had endured a crucible might appreciate. Both women agreed that in spite of the bitter cold, they had actually appreciated the beautiful, wintery landscape. Somehow the winter storm had even seemed to frame their cause in a way that might last beyond time itself.

The snow, once seen by many as a challenge, turned out to be the symbol of purity and resilience that they all needed. Not only had it not frozen their spirits, but it actually had forged a connection among those together in the nation’s capital to advance the sanctity of life further.

Homeward Bound …

With hearts warmed by their renewed, shared understanding — and many cups of hot chocolate, Mo and Kate made their way back to the bus. Soon, both women and the entourage with them would all be headed south again. Mo and Kate both understood that their experience had not only changed their minds and hearts, but it had also tempered the souls of all who had gathered to celebrate the gift of life in our nation’s capital that special, wintery day.

The snow was just an added bonus!

Before long, the whole crew found themselves breaking out in joyful song as Fr. Rhett skillfully steered their little, blue bus down the snow-covered highway. Everyone agreed that Bishop Jacques said it best when he said, “Thank you, Jesus!”
