GARDEN CITY SC (CR News) — Sin was up this year along the Grand Strand, according to Msgr. Ed Fitzgerald, the parochial vicar of St. Michaels on the South Strand. The priest, who not only is an experienced analyst in the economics of sin, but is also renowned for his wry sense of humor, made the comment during a recent daily mass.
Background
At first, our news crew was stunned. That’s because, as Fr. Ed preached, the people laughed. It was not mocking laughter, of course. To the news crew, it seemed more like a group of people who actually expected good humor to accompany the proclamation of the Good News.
The Nitty Gritty
Fr. Ed was communicating various opportunities for the sacrament of Reconciliation during the Lenten season when he dropped the “bombshell.” He told the people attending mass that people would be lined up for confession. A dozen priests might be needed to handle all the confessions.
That’s when he announced it. “Sin was up this year in Myrtle Beach!”
In a brief interview after the mass, it was clear to our team that Fr. Ed was a man with a wonderful sense of humor. We have added him to our “Pray4” ministry. We’re sharing his Prayer Card below.
Our Story
Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.
(Jas 5:16, NRSV)
That’s our story, and we’re sticking to it.
